Who we are
The Northwest Institute for Conflict Resolution facilitates conflict resolution programs that empowers organizations, businesses, and marginalized communities.
Mission and vision
Taking the right approach to conflict management at your institution, organization or company can mean the difference between a toxic work environment and a collaborative team climate with employees living up to their full potential. Our conflict management and dispute resolution training can provide the perfect opportunity to mainstream constructive conflict management through practice good communication skills that help reduce tension in the workplace.
We offer a variety of customizable conflict resolution training to help your staff become more adept at preventing or managing destructive conflicts, as well as handling conflicts and resolving different forms of disputes when they arise.
Whether you are looking for a one hour seminar, a half-day workshop, a customized training program, (virtual or in person), or a topic for your next staff development day, we can help!

The training is usually interactive, using case studies, role plays, videos, and discussions.
NICR was founded by faculty members of PSU's Graduate Program, through the initiative of Professor Robert Gould, founder of the Conflict Resolution Program at Portland State University. It provides conflict practitioners an opportunity to provide service to the community through trainings.

The Northwest Institute for Conflict Resolution was incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization in 2002. Since then, NICR has worked with numerous businesses and community organizations dedicated to community conflict resolution, often in partnership with the University of Oregon Law School’s Graduate Program in Conflict Resolution.

Shifting Sport Culture (October 2008)
Don McPherson, College Football Hall of Fame quarterback and founder of the Sports Leadership institute of Adelphi University, spoke with coaches, student athletes, referees and practitioners about reducing conflict in sports as part of the Competition not Conflict (CnC) project.
Building Cultures of Peace (September 2008)
NICR supported the national annual conference for the Peace and Justice Studies Association.
Realms of Forgiveness: An Opportunity for Dialogue (February 2008)
A two-week event co-sponsored by NICR, the University of Oregon Law
School and Community Mediations Services. Featured workshops, keynote speakers, and an international art exhibit called the Forgiveness Project.
